Tropical Storm GONI StormWatch #03

Tropical Storm GONI StormWatch No. 03

Tropical Storm (TS) GONI continues gaining strength as it moves farther away from the Northern Mariana Islands. This storm is expected to become a Typhoon later tonight or Monday morning (Aug 17). Based on the latest Global Dynamic Forecast Models (GDFM), GONI shall enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday morning or afternoon (Aug 18) and long-range forecasts show the cyclone to be near or just north of the Batanes Group of Islands on Friday or Saturday, Aug 21 or 22.

As of 5:00 PM PhT (09:00 GMT) today, Sunday, August 16, 2015, the center of GONI was located some 2,365 km East of Central Luzon, Philippines...or 930 km East of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) [15.5N 143.7E]...with maximum sustained winds of 100 kph near the center and gustiness up to 130 kph. It was moving West-Northwest at 11 kph towards the North Philippine Sea.

TS GONI is still too far away to directly affect any part of the Philippines for the next 5 days..

The next WeatherPhilippines StormWatch on TS GONI will be issued tomorrow evening (Mon Aug 17).

Meanwhile, TS ATSANI continues to intensify and is also expected to become a Typhoon later tonight. This system remains outside of the PAR, and Global Models doesn't show a track towards the Philippines, therefore, ATSANI is not a threat to the Philippine Islands.
