Current Status and Outlook

CHABA has intensified into a Tropical Storm (TS) as it continues to move westerly across the open waters of the Western Pacific Ocean.

This storm is forecast to turn West-Northwest to Northwestward within the next 24 hours towards the easternmost part of the Philippine Sea, and is likely to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Saturday morning or afternoon (Oct 01).

Where is Chaba?

As of 11:00 AM PhT today, September 30...0300 GMT. The center was located over the waters east of the Central Philippine Sea (near 13.9N 138.1E), about 725 km west of Guam or 1,480 km east of Bicol Region, PHL. 

How strong is it?

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 85 kph near the center...Gustiness: 110 kph

Where is it heading?

It was moving West @ 19 kph, towards the easternmost part of the Central Philippine Sea.

Forecast Highlights

- Chaba is expected to become a Typhoon (TY) tomorrow morning (Sat, Oct 01).

- Chaba remains not a threat to the country.

- Chaba is forecast to just enter the PAR on Saturday (Oct 01) & exit on Monday (Oct 03).

- Chaba shall just pass along the open waters of the Central and North Philippine Seas, and will be between 650-700 km from Batanes Group of Islands on Monday morning, Oct 03.  Its circulation will remain at sea, far away from the Philippine Landmass.

Current Status and Outlook

Tropical Depression (TD) CHABA which moved across the Western Pacific Ocean over the past few days has just passed over the Northern Mariana Islands last night.

This depression is forecast to move West-Northwest towards the easternmost part of the Philippine Sea, and is likely to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Saturday morning (Oct 01).

Where is Chaba?

As of 11:00 AM PhT today, September 29...0300 GMT. The ill-defined center was located over the sea west of the Northern Mariana Islands (near 14.0N 142.3E),about 276 km west-northwest of Guam or 1,932 km east of Bicol Region, PHL. 

How strong is it?

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 55 kph near the center...Gustiness: 75 kph

Where is it heading?

It was moving West @ 24 kph, towards the easternmost part of the Central Philippine Sea.

Forecast Highlights

- Chaba is expected to become a Tropical Storm (TS) later tonight or Friday (Sept 30).

- Chaba is not a threat to the country.

- Chaba is forecast to just enter PAR on Oct 01 & exit on Oct 03.

- Chaba shall just pass along the open waters of the North Philippine Sea, between 700-800 km away from Batanes Group of Islands.  Its circulation will remain at sea.

Current Status and Outlook

MEGI (HELEN) is now outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and has weakened into a Tropical Storm (TS) as it makes its last landfall over Fujian Province in Southeastern China.

MEGI (HELEN) will rapidly dissipate and eventually become just a remnant low pressure over the mountains of Southeastern China within the next 24 hours.

This is the Final Update on this Tropical Cyclone.

Meanwhile, the enhanced Southwest Monsoon (Habagat)will still bring occasional rains with thunderstorms and gusty winds not exceeding 40 km/hr across the Western Sections of Central Luzon including Metro Manila, MiMaRoPa, and Western Visayas today. Sea travel for small to medium size sea crafts at this time will be risky across the area.

Where is Megi (Helen)?

As of 5:00 AM PhT today, September 28...2100 GMT. The center was located over Fujian Province, China (near 25.3N 118.5E), about 98 km north-northeast of Xiamen City, China or 637 km northwest of Basco, Batanes. 

How strong is it?

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 90 kph near the center...Gustiness: 110 kph

Where is it heading?

It was moving West-Northwest @ 17 kph, across Fujian Province, Southeastern China.
